Renew San Diego is one of the newest congregations in the oldest denomination in the United States, the Reformed Church in America.  We affirm the ancient creeds and confessions of the church, which are below.

If you are new to the idea of creeds and confessions, start with the Apostle’s Creed.  In the 4th century, leaders from every part of the Christian church convened and asked the question, “What is it that every Christian believes?”  This is what author and theologian C.S. Lewis called, “Mere Christianity,” or the basic common denominator of all Christians.

Confessions are statements of faith that responded to particular issues the church has spoken out about through the ages.  For example, take a look at the Belhar confession, which proclaims the church’s stance against the abusive segregation of apartheid in South Africa and emphasizes the truth that people of every ethnicity and culture are created in the image and likeness of God, and are called to stand for justice for those being oppressed.

By affirming creeds and confessions of the historic church, we acknowledge that Christianity is not something we invent on our own, it is a journey in which we reunite with God, together, in communion with all those who have gone before us from every age and generation.
